The Weeknd is undoubtedly my favorite modern day artist. I sometimes feel like a luddite in terms of my musical tastes because I more often than not prefer old over new. I’ve probably reiterated this ad nausea, but most of the current offerings sound either too pop, are too shallow, and/or have poor lyricism.

That’s why it feels like I’ve been waiting almost an eternity for a new, good album to drop. Starboy has high consistency throughout the tracks in quality and is far better than The Weeknd’s previous album, “Behind the Beauty and Madness,” which strayed with abandonment into the mainstream pop realm. Although different in feel to the narcotised slow-jams and plaintive lyrics of House of Balloons and Trilogy, Starboy is an evolutionary step in the right direction. The weakest track on the new album is definitely “False Alarm,” in my opinion.

I haven’t posted a new track in a while, but as of late, I’ve been keeping it lit with $uicideboy$. I dabble with EDM and all that electro stuff here and there, but my interest in that genre always fluctuates. Truthfully, I haven’t been listening to any of it recently not just due to its repetitive nature, but being associated with today’s candied out kids that shuffle dance is not my personal preference.

What I always stay grounded and consistent in is hip hop. Cloud rap, trillwave, whatever you want to call it, I think it’s a refreshing twist in the otherwise subpar landscape of modern hip hop – that’s plagued by horrible lyricists like Lil Wayne and other nonsense like warble rap.

I recommend checking out the album Now the Moon’s Rising as a starter to $uicideboy$. You can find it on their Bandcamp. They recently released a new album, Radical, that’s conveniently available on iTunes. Here’s a track from it.

The Weeknd is my favorite contemporary artist. It was a cool experience seeing his set live at Coachella earlier this year. The description of his artistry style is provocative in and of itself, “songs built around a fogged, crepuscular production, and feature slow tempos, rumbling bass, and forlorn echoes. The Weeknd sings in a falsetto register, and exhibits a pleading, anxious tone”.

I’m not a big fan of his latest “Can’t Feel My Face” song, as that feels too pop and mainstream oriented. “King of the Fall” is one of my higher ranked tracks. The darker and more carnal the undertones – the better.
