I went on an encompassing tour of the Bay Area with Mike last Saturday, with the drive culminating in a last minute destination to Alice’s in Woodside. By the time we left and reached arrived back to my neighborhood, the sun was starting to set… which meant that the Golden Hour was upon us and I didn’t want to let such an optimal setting of light go to waste. I quickly grabbed and dusted off my trusty Canon 5D Classic and took these shots. This was the first time I used a real camera in over a year.

Throwback Tuesday

It’s past midnight and technically Wednesday at the time of posting, but whatever. Still calling it Tuesday.

I stumbled upon this picture somewhere while lurking around and saved it. This was back when I was going through the first bout of bug fixes and dropped the car off at Marcus’. It’s interesting to see my car amidst the shop.

Mike’s 1995 Porsche 911 993

My buddy Mike picked up a Black on Red 993 Carrera 2 from Mark of Fatlace. The car looked well sorted and clean in the pictures and I was able to see it in person last weekend. I will always have a soft side for air-cooled Porsches and the 993 generation is the perfect blend of modern touches and enduring qualities of a classic.

From what I was told, aside from the obvious Rotiform wheels, the Porsche came with an RS steering rack, RS clutch, H&R coilovers, and a couple other minor things.

My favorite aspect of the car is the simplicity of the interior and the way the cabin feels like a tub. This one is also properly sized… newer Porsches are growing bigger by the year, it seems. The floor mounted pedals take some getting used to. I’ve had cars with the accelerator pedal mounted to the floor, but never the clutch and brake. The engine awakens and becomes more responsive once its variable timing kicks in. There’s a noticeable punch in power at around 4000-4500 RPM.

Congratulations on the pick up, Mike. May the modding bug bite you in all its glory and eventually see you to the neighborhood of at least 350RWHP+… :-)

How the Honda RC213V-S is Built

Much like the Ducati Desmosedici, Honda is bringing to the public a street version of their MotoGP bike for the public. With a $184,000 price tag and a limited run of 200 units, it would not have been economical to invest in mass-production tooling and assembly procedures.

Instead, Honda is building these bikes entirely by hand with a small team of specialized workers. The video below gives a look at workshop, I always geek out over stuff like this. Areas of interests include 1:32, the chassis welding and jig; 1:50, the sheet metal shaping for the head stock; and 2:12, everything appears to be hand welded.

Although I gave up my motorcycling days, I still like to dabble in it and observe the trends from time to time.

Project Binky Webisodes – 4WD Austin Mini

If you have any interest in car builds and mechanics in general, these series of videos are well worth the watch. While it may start off a bit quirky and slow, get through the first episode and you will quickly find out just how extreme this project is.

The amount of fabrication and chassis work to cram a Celica GT-4’s entire drivetrain into a bucket of an Austin Mini Cooper is impressive. The work may not be full of pretty Tig welds and billet aluminum, but this is craftsmanship and ingenuity at its core.
